About Sanctuary

Sanctuary Church of the Open Door has been a place of refuge and safety for over 45 years in Philadelphia. Founded by Bishop Audrey F. Bronson and Dr. Becky M. Carlton, the church provides a welcoming space for worship and meets the physical needs of the community.

Our LeGACY

Bishop Bronson, formerly a professor at Cheyney University, answered her call to ministry with full dedication. Despite the challenges, she chose to follow God’s direction, leading the church from a small gathering at 60th Street and Larchwood Avenue to its current location on Walnut Street. This move allowed the church to expand its services, including a school (Sanctuary Christian Academy) that once operated up to the twelfth grade.

Bishop Bronson was chosen as the first female leader of Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity. She was a world-respected scholar and preacher. She could sit with kings and minister to the most marginalized people, all at once. Bishop Bronson was witty and captivating. She has left an unforgettable impact on the world and our congregation. We honor her legacy.
